The Edgar County Humane Association’s mission is to provide as many animals as possible with the same kind of happiness. Get Involved!

Getting involved with the Edgar County Humane Association (ECHA) can be as simple as you would like it to be! Not everyone can adopt or foster an animal. Whether it's because of unwilling roommates, lack of funds to own a pet, or simply because a family has too many animals already, some people might not be able to help in taking an animal home. Getting animals to their forever families is ECHA's main mission but there are many other opportunities in which you can assist.

Volunteer!

One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to help is to volunteer your time to the shelter. Volunteer jobs range from caring for the animals (walking them, playing with them, or bathing them) to caring for the facility (cleaning cages, the shelter, or helping with daily activities).

                                                         Donate!

Another wonderful way to provide assistance to the Edgar County Humane Association is to donate supplies. The abundance of animals that come through the doors of ECHA make restocking supplies a necessity. If you are unsure what items ECHA might need just ask yourself what your own pet needs and loves. You can also call the Edgar County Humane Association at (217) 466-9415 for specific items that are needed. Donatable items include food and water bowls, pet beds, towels, pet food, pet beds, collars, leashes, and grooming tools.

Animals like this sleepy pup love having their own toys to play with. Stuffed animals, tennis balls, rope toys, squeaky toys, and food puzzle toys are just a few examples of the many types of toys that animals would enjoy.

Animal shelters like the Edgar County Humane Association also need other household cleaning items to help with the upkeep of the facility. A list of specific items ECHA uses can be obtained by calling the association at (217) 466-9415. Items such as disinfectant, paper towels, toilet paper, newspapers, towels, and even office supplies can be useful in ECHA's daily activities.

Don't Count Me Out!

Did you know that black cats are less likely to be adopted? This is because of the superstition that follows them! "Black Cat Syndrome" is the idea that black cats are less likely to be adopted than their lighter colored counterparts, all because of their fur color! The superstition that follows black cats is everywhere, but it's nothing more than superstition! In fact, some superstitions actually say that owning a black cat is good luck.  Please review the following links to find out more about "black cat syndrome"!
Pet Talk: 'Black cat syndrome' may be more myth than reality
Stigmas and Superstitions plague black pets

"I adopted my dog from ECHA and he changed my life"

Hello, there! My name is Kelsie and I am happy to share an experience of adopting pets from the ECHA with the readers of this blog. At the time that my first dog was adopted, there was a shortage of space and lots of dogs needed immediate foster families. One of my roommates asked us if we would be willing to foster a dog: of course I would! The moment I walked into my apartment, I knew I was not just going to "foster" this pup. I was going to be his fur mom forever! For a week or so, Sam (then Scout) and I played it coy, but I eventually decided that it was time to take a big step. For the first time ever, I was going to have a dog of my very own!

As of Christmas 2013, Sam and I officially belonged to each other... The adoption fee for Sam was my favorite present that year!

Sam is now almost 3 and he is the biggest gentleman, as ever. He loves naps, playing with his fur brother, George, and giving side-eyes. He still knows the hand commands that he learned while he was in the care of the ECHA and his favorite treat is chicken nuggets from Chick Fil A.  He most definitely has a special place in my heart and, on the days that he decides he wants to cuddle, I can tell I have a special place in his as well.
